Running Though the Summer

We've been running through the summer on our usual evening playing various games and simply having fun. It's all been very relaxed and fortunately the weather has been good to us.

21st July 2008 : Cyclist Badge

With Summer upon us a lot of time is going to spent out side. To get around the use of a bike is really useful. Riding a bike however needs to be done safely and with a good knowledge of how to take care of the bike.

With some of our Scouts already holding there Cycling proficiency we had a look at the Safety, Tools and Maintenance part of the Cyclist badge. Two of our Scouts had enough knowledge and Proficiency in this area as well as holding the Cycling proficiency to gain there badge. Well done Daniel and Jordan.

14th July 2008 : Hike to Hylands

The Centenary Celebrations of Scouting have now past but there are many ways in which to remember 100 years of Scouting Worldwide. One of which is the One World Garden in Hylands park

We decided to pay a visit to the Garden to see how it has evolved over the last year. Starting form the 24th Hut we Hiked into Writtle via the chip shop where we stopped for necessary sustenance, then on to the park where those of us who hadn't had the opportunity to visit the Garden previously appreciated the architecture and planting which really makes it a stand out memorial to the Centenary Celebrations.

7th July 2008 : Water Conservation.

This week we took a look at the importance of not wasting water. This was sparked by a campaign currently being run by Essex & Suffolk water. The water company are currently supplying and fitting water saving items such as water butts and aerating shower heads for FREE to help reduce water wastage.

They also supplied us with educational packs for each of our members that contained lots of goodies and a CD-Rom game all about saving water.

We had a guest speaker to start with who is the Youth Pastor for Raw Youth and grew up in Australia. Josiah explained how problematic water conservation is in Australia and how lucky we really are here in the UK to have as much water as we do.

We then a had a good look at the game supplied by Essex & Suffolk Water which shows very well how we can all do just small things to make a difference.

30th June : Litter Pick

Chelmsford Scouts has an arrangement with the County Cricket Ground where they pay us to tidy up after a Cricket match, this is a great way for us fund raise. The leadership also see this as a community project so any member that attends get credit towards there community challenge badge.
